10 Tips for SEO Success

Search engine ranking algorithms change constantly, but despite this, there are still many proven SEO best practices which help you optimize your site. Read on to learn more about these tips for SEO success.

Tip 1. Pagespeed

Think about the last time you searched for something on Google and clicked a link that didn’t load very fast. What did you do? At a minimum, you were probably saying, “Come on, come on. I don’t have all day.” And if you’re really in a hurry, you probably clicked back to search results.

That’s not good for us as site owners, and it’s not good for Google either.

If your site doesn’t load fast, Google is less likely to show it in search results.

There are many ways to improve your pagespeed. Some of them are pretty technical, and some are easy for anyone to do.

Here are a few things you can easily do to improve your pagespeed.

Reduce Image Size

Large images are one of the biggest culprits. Your goal for image size should be less than 100 kb.

For most of your images, you should use jpg files rather than pngs. And it’s even better if you can use a webp file.

Another option is to use an image compression tool like ShortPixel.

Use a Fast Hosting Company

You may need to switch hosts if your site is slow. I use and recommend WPOpt for larger sites and Siteground for smaller sites.

Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN)

Many hosting companies use CDNs now, so talk to your host to find out if they do. If they don’t, I recommend Cloudflare.

Tip 2. Secure Site

Having a secure site is non-negotiable. A security certificate will ensure that your content is delivered by SSL (secure socket layer).

If you have https instead of http at the beginning of your URLs, you have a secure site. If you don’t, talk to your hosting company. Many of them will provide one free of charge.

Tip 3. User Intent

User intent (also called search intent) is the why behind a keyword.

Think about the last Google search you did. Maybe you searched for “tires” because you need new ones and want to find out where to buy them or who has the best prices.

But what if you searched for “tire pressure?” You could be looking for the correct tire pressure for your car, how to check the pressure in your tire, or what to do when the tire pressure light comes on.

The type and content of your blog post would be very different for each of these.

Make sure that your blog post addresses the intent of the search.

Tip 4. Keyword in Proper Places

There are several places where you’ll want to use your keyword.

  • Blog Post Title – Having your keyword at the beginning of your blog post title is best.
  • Headings and Sub-headings – Use your keyword in a couple of these, but don’t put it in every single heading.
  • Image File Names – Add your keyword to the file names of a few of your images.
  • Image Titles – I usually make my image file names and titles the same, so my keywords will be in the titles too.
  • Meta description – Include your keyword in your meta description.
  • Content –  Use your keywords and synonyms for your keyword throughout your content. The number of times you use it depends on how long your post is. The longer it is, the more times you can use it.
  • Inbound links – Have links to your new post from other posts. For example, one of my posts is Ways to Improve SEO for Your Website. Somewhere within that post, I want to include a link to this post using the phrase “tips for SEO success” as the anchor text. You can find the definition of anchor text in my blogging glossary.

Tip 5. Great Content

If you don’t have great content, your posts will never rank in search results. But what is great content?

Content needs to be helpful to your reader. They should be able to come to your blog post and find out all the information they need.

Make sure your content answers all their questions. This usually means that your content will be long—at least 1,000 words or more.

Tip 6. User Experience

When readers come to your site, what kind of experience do they have?

Is your font large enough for them to read it even on mobile? Is it a simple font? I love the pretty script font, but it can be very difficult to read.

In our school district, we didn’t teach cursive for a number of years, so people like my sons can’t even read script font. (So use it sparingly on your Pinterest pins)

Do you have headings and sub-headings to make it easier for folks to skim your post?

Have you included images to make your posts more visually appealing?

Have you used plenty of white space on your blog?

All of these will encourage folks to stay on your site a bit longer.

Tip 7. Use Unique Titles, Descriptions, and Content

This lets the search engines know that your content is original material and can add further knowledge to the other information that can already be found on the internet about your topic.

Tip 8. Optimize Title Tag

Your title tag is also known as the SEO title. Typically, it’s the title of your post.

But if you use an SEO plugin like the free version of Yoast, you can change the title tag.

Why would you want to have a different title tag? A big reason is that you can make the title tag more “clickable.”

On my Cub Scout Ideas blog, I have a post about how to make armpit fudge. (yes, I know it sound gross)

My H1 tag for this post is “How to Make Armpit Fudge.” The title tag is “How to Make Armpit Fudge for a Yummy Snack {Recipe}.”

The title tag is much more compelling, and it is more likely to be clicked than the shorter H1.

But in both instances, my keyword phrase, “how to make armpit fudge,” is at the beginning of the title.

Tip 9. Internal Linking

Using terms that Google Search Console shows you’re already ranking for as anchor text, link from your better performing posts to your posts with less traffic.

This passes some of the authority of the first post to the second post and can help it move up in rankings.

LinkWhisper is a tool that makes internal linking super easy!

Tip 10. Backlinks

These show the search engines that your content is valuable enough for other blogs to link to.

But you don’t want to have links from just any blog—you want to make sure that they are not low quality sites.

And whatever you do, don’t pay for links. That will not help you!

Following these tips for SEO success will enable you to achieve higher rankings in the search engines. The higher your ranking, the more traffic you’ll get.
